2019 New Year’s Resolution: Possible Goals for Expats

As the new year begins, I am sure that just like me, you also have the renewed spirit and enthusiasm relative to it. I remember a co-expat of mine, telling me last week that this coming year, he would like to be much healthier so that he could perform his duties and responsibilities well.

In his case, it was more of a health resolution. I honestly think that as 2019 begins, it is a given opportunity for all of us to once more reflect on our current life status and imagine thoroughly on what or where we would like to be in the future.

It may perhaps be an intertwining play of looking back and looking forward, and with enough contemplation, we come up with new year’s resolution anchored to our dreams. As expats, and possibly as ordinary workers, one of the primary aspect that we would always want to focus on is the element of finances.

This is not because we are still after the material wealth, but it is because through these that we can provide the needs of the people dear to us. In this article, I will be sharing with you some tidbits of ideas on how you could enjoy a much healthy, and of course wealthy, 2019!

1. Work hard

This is not the year to be complacent, for as the year comes, the new set of bills and obligations are also set to happen. As a worker, grab every opportunity to work (for as long as it does not jeopardize your health) and work with all your heart. Mind you; there is a vast difference between merely working and working with the heart.

You can earn while you are happy, you can get tired, but at the same time, there is a joy deep within. In short, work hard, without having to compromise your health and happiness. This is the first new year’s resolution which I could advise you of.

2. Earn more

The more you work, the more you will earn. This is not just about getting money and saving them just for the sake of having a saving. Remember that it is all about preparing for something bigger and more significant. May it is for the future of your kids or the future of your family, your bigger earnings could always be of great help. Seize every opportunity to earn and enjoy all the privileges later on as you joyfully reap the fruit of your hard work.

3. Take good care of your health

Health is wealth, as the famous saying would go. No matter how much work you have, and how much money you have at your bank account, it will always boil down to the biggest question of your happiness and health. Remember that as a worker, you have to be fully aware that you also have to look after yourself.

It means that you need to be sure that you will be at the pink of your health at all times. Imagine earning a lot only to spend it on buying medicine? It does not sound fun right? It is better to look for prevention that of the cure. In line with this, eat healthy food, sleep enough, exercise, and be happy! Remember that stress should not hinder you from living a healthy and happy lifestyle.

4. Reconnect with friends

Perhaps one of the most needed new year’s resolutions for you is to reconnect with good old friends. As a worker, you most of the time notice that you are most of the time not updated with your friends. You somehow lost your connection. You may be friends on a social networking site like Facebook, and yet you do not even bother to talk and to have an exchange of conversation.

In the end, friendship gets lost, the hear gets sad, and the quality of life suffers. Remember that as this new year comes, you are also given a chance to once more reconnect with people who are dear to you back home. Send them a message, have an exchange of stories, and rekindle the fire of your friendship.

5. Sharpen the saw

This new year’s resolution may be a little bit boring in your ears, but I am telling you that this is something that you should also emphasize. As workers, note that we are supposed to be lifetime learners. With the speed of upgrading technology, education, and skills, we sometimes feel at lost. We seem to be incapable of coping with the needs, trends, and demands of the industry where we work at.

At times, we also feel insecure and even threaten with the idea of newly hired employees because they are capable of doing new things that we are not even aware of. So, you need to sharpen the saw! It means that once more, you have to educate yourself about the things which you need to learn. Discover new ways of doing things. Learn new skills. All of these could help you be more competent and confident in doing your work.

6. Be tough enough

There are times that I meet co-expats, and as I see them, the bravery and toughness are evident just by the way they speak and act. They seem to be independent, strong, and confident people. Yes, because the situation needed them to be one. They needed to be strong and robust so that they could cope with the stress and demands of working far away from home. But as I reflect about it, such toughness should not limit you from being the loving human being that you are supposed to be. Be tough enough to make a wise decision, but be thoughtful enough to consider people around you. In trying to be tough, never let other people down.

7. Plan financially

At the end of it, planning financially is a crucial step to be taken, most especially this new year. It means that as a worker, you are supposed to be a good planner on your financial aspect. Track where your earnings are going, figure out how you could adjust some on your budget to save more, and do all things which you can still do to so that you can still contribute on your financial aspect. Nothing beats being financially prepared, because no matter what life throws at you, you shall always be prepared.

New Year’s resolution is essential goals and objectives that people set for themselves so that they could achieve something. Though some would say that these may be difficult to do, there is nothing wrong with trying. I believe that as workers, once we set our mind on our goals and be committed to achieving these, there is nothing we cannot do.

As this new year comes, I hope and pray for a much healthy and wealthy year ahead of you. May the good Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones. May God bless you abundantly! Happy new year!
